This celebration was established in 2015 by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) during the Milan International Exhibition, seeking to unite producing and importing countries to address the challenges of the coffee sector and celebrate its achievements.
In Mexico, coffee is a fundamental drink, and its production is concentrated in states such as Chiapas, Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca and Guerrero. During this date, various brands and coffee shops offer special promotions to encourage consumption.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in our country there are 15 coffee producing states; in the south of the country, there is Chiapas, which is the main producing state, contributing 41 percent of the national volume, followed by Veracruz with 24 percent and Puebla with 15.3 percent. But it is also found in other states such as Oaxaca, Guerrero, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, Nayarit, Colima, Jalisco, Querétaro, Tabasco.
Official figures say that it is a strategic crop in Mexico; its production employs more than 500 thousand producers from 15 states and 480 municipalities. Also, in each state, thanks to the soil and climatic conditions, it takes on a unique and special flavor.
Although quality coffee is produced in each state, lovers of this bean say that Oaxaca is considered one of the best in the country for its smooth flavor. In addition, in this territory, the characteristics of the soil, altitude and climate allow the cultivation of Arabica and Robusta coffee, whose standards are ideal for its production and marketing.
An interesting fact is that high-quality coffee is grown in seven of the eight regions of Oaxaca: Cañada, Papaloapan, Sierras Norte, Sierra Sur, Istmo, Costa and Mixteca, with options for all tastes and being the livelihood of dozens of families after its organic harvest.
In addition to trade promotions, International Coffee Day is also an opportunity to reflect on the situation of coffee producers.
Many face challenges such as unstable prices and difficult working conditions. Therefore, the aim is to promote sustainable practices in the coffee industry and raise awareness about the importance of fair trade.
