“We ask the guardians to protect her on her journey. We ask our ancestors to enlighten her in every decision she makes, so that she has strength and humility,” said the indigenous women who performed the ceremony of handing over the Baton of Command, while the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, raised her hands towards the 4 cardinal points.
“We ask the president to never abandon the mission of looking out for the Mexican people and to always choose to resolve through dialogue,” said the indigenous women from the Zócalo of Mexico City.
With incense they told the head of the Executive that “she is not alone, we are all the people to continue working and to raise all the peoples high.”
“Thank you because for the first time a woman is with us, the struggle of women finally brings justice.”
The newly appointed president received the Baton of Command from a Michoacan Purépecha woman from Cheranástico.
Eloísa Bautista Campos, a member of the community in Paracho, was the one who handed over the baton along with 5 women members of the delegation, who carried out the ceremony.
The baton is a symbol of political and spiritual power of the indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples and by handing it over to Sheinbaum, they recognize her as the legitimate ruler.
