The body of Clemente Gómez Gómez, former mayor of San Andrés Duraznal, Chiapas, was found on Tuesday morning on the banks of the Acapulquito River, on the Ejido San Francisco la Frontera highway, official sources reported.
According to authorities, the discovery was made at around noon. However, residents of the community of Santa Catarina de Huitiupán indicated that the former mayor was last seen at a party on Sunday afternoon, where he was involved in a fight and subsequently fled to an unknown location.
It was not until Tuesday that the same residents reported the location of a body. In response to this, elements of the Ministerial, State and Municipal Police, as well as the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo), arrived at the scene to remove the body and evidence.
However, due to customs and practices, the relatives refused to have the body transferred to the Semefo for the legal autopsy.
In a statement, the Chiapas Prosecutor’s Office stated that Clemente Gómez’s body showed no signs of torture or gunshot wounds, so it opened an investigation file for the crime of homicide.
Clemente Gómez Gómez was president of the indigenous municipality of San Andrés Duraznal, located in the Los Bosques region, and headed the Mover a Chiapas Party during the 2021-2024 period.
