The Jalisco State Attorney General’s Office (FE) reported the opening of an investigation into the murder of a citizen from the United States in Guadalajara, who apparently received a gunshot wound after being assaulted.

The events occurred around 11:00 a.m. on October 27 outside a restaurant located in the Americana neighborhood, specifically between Morelos and Colonias streets.

According to the authorities, elements of the Guadalajara Security Secretariat received a report of an injured person, so they went to the aforementioned site, locating a man with wounds in the chest and right cheekbone. Paramedics arrived at the scene, who confirmed that the victim no longer had vital signs.

The first investigations revealed that the 32-year-old man was walking through the streets when the alleged perpetrators threatened him with a firearm and robbed him of a high-end watch, then injured him and fled in a taxi.

According to Telediario, witnesses say that the perpetrators of the crime were two men and a woman, whose characteristics are unknown.

A Municipal Police officer told the aforementioned newspaper that the young man’s family was in a “state of shock,” so they could not provide further information.

The scene was processed and the body was transferred to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) by experts from the Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences, in order to perform the corresponding autopsy.

For its part, the Intentional Homicide Investigation Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office heads the office and field work to capture those responsible.

What happens when a foreign citizen is murdered in Mexico?

When a foreign citizen is murdered in Mexico, a protocol is activated that involves several actors.

The local police initiate an investigation to clarify the crime, while the government of the deceased’s country of origin usually gets involved through its embassy or consulate, offering assistance to the family of the deceased and working with the Mexican authorities – only if the event warrants it.

The case can attract media attention and, depending on the circumstances, may have diplomatic repercussions.
