Tamaulipas has become one of the United States’ preferred routes for deporting compatriots to Mexico, receiving tens of thousands a year from Nuevo Laredo to Matamoros.
Data from the Migration Policy Unit of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) establish that, in the last decade, Tamaulipas was positioned among the three federal entities where the most Mexicans were deported by the governments of Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
Three out of 10 Mexicans who are returned by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service to Mexico are delivered at the Tamaulipas border. The figure is only surpassed by the deportation records in Sonora.
With the virtual victory of Donald Trump as the new president of the United States, he announced a massive deportation plan that will cost more than 88 billion dollars to return the four million Mexicans who live and work in that country.
During the Trump administration (2017-2021), 247,719 Mexicans were deported through Tamaulipas, which represents a difference of 38.78% compared to the 178,487 deportations carried out during the Joe Biden administration, until September 2024.
Figures from the Migration Policy Unit assure that the Trump administration was more aggressive in deporting compatriots to Mexico, and this was reflected during his administration in the receptions in Tamaulipas.
The year with the most deportations of Mexicans by Tamaulipas during the Trump presidency was 2019, with 71,083 records, surpassing the ceiling of 70,000 that had not been seen since 2014.
With Joe Biden, Tamaulipas has had a ‘rest’, since the peak of deportations was observed in 2023 with 69,597 returns of Mexicans by the state.
While as of September of this year, 37,080 deportations have been confirmed, placing the state as the second national place with the most deportations of countrymen by the US Immigration Department.
The announcement of Trump’s immigration policies to deport those who have “invaded” the country has caused fear among Mexican families living in the US and who do not have legal residence documentation, due to the risk of being caught and separated from their loved ones.
However, the same figures indicate that the government with the highest number of deportations of Mexicans through Tamaulipas was Obama’s, with 279,519, despite its “humanitarian” policies.
