Turtle tacos?: Michoacán’s Tourism Secretariat’s misstep on social media

The Michoacán government’s social media accounts mixed up the images and, when promoting tortillas made in the state, published photographs of black sea turtles.

On its X account, the local government wrote: “Michoacán tortillas are the tastiest in the world… Come on, deny it! What would you put on a freshly made tortilla?”, followed by several photos of the endangered animal.

The post, which was deleted after 20 minutes, was the subject of criticism from users who questioned whether what they were referring to were turtle tacos.

“I wouldn’t put turtles, honestly,” wrote one X user; while another asked the Michoacán government why there were photographs of turtles.

Prior to that post, two days ago, the account had uploaded a photograph of two turtles hugging.

An endangered species

Some users were surprised because all species of sea turtle are protected by NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, as they are in danger of extinction, according to the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).

Michoacán, one of the country’s coastal states, is one of the most important turtle spawning centers in the country, and every year thousands of specimens arrive between the months of June and December.

As part of its tourism offering, the entity offers the experience of participating in the release of newborn turtles, which aims to raise awareness about the endangered animal.

The beaches Azul, Colola and Ixtapilla are the ones that concentrate the largest number of turtles that come to spawn, so they hold different festivals, surfing tournaments and cultural activities to teach about the conservation of this marine animal.

Currently, the entity is in black turtle season.
