Spirit Airlines’ recent bankruptcy filing will not have a direct impact on the tourist destination of Puerto Vallarta, as the low-cost airline had suspended its operations at this airport since last February.
This was confirmed by Luis Villaseñor Nolasco, director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust, who noted that, although he did not remember the exact number of flights that Spirit Airlines operated to this destination, he did confirm that the airline had stopped offering its services several months before the bankruptcy.
Spirit Airlines no longer had a presence in Puerto Vallarta since last February. Therefore, the company’s recent bankruptcy filing will not affect Puerto Vallarta, Villaseñor Nolasco assured.
It should be remembered that Spirit Airlines began operating in Puerto Vallarta in June 2021, offering direct flights to Los Angeles, Houston and Dallas. However, earlier this year, the airline decided to suspend its routes to this destination, without specifying the reasons for this decision.
Spirit Airlines’ bankruptcy comes after a federal judge blocked the proposed merger with JetBlue. The Florida-based airline filed for bankruptcy on Monday, seeking to restructure its debt and continue operating.
Despite Spirit Airlines’ financial situation, the company assured that flights and ticket sales will continue as normal, and that passengers will not be affected by this process.
“The most important thing is that our customers can continue booking and flying without problems,” the airline said in a statement.
The departure of Spirit Airlines from Puerto Vallarta does not represent a great loss for the tourist destination, since other airlines continue to operate flights to this destination. In addition, Puerto Vallarta’s tourism sector has shown resilience in the face of the challenges of the pandemic and has achieved a gradual recovery in recent months.
