Authorities are advising motorists to take alternate routes to avoid worsening the traffic congestion.
After an 18-hour closure of the Mexico-Querétaro highway, intense vehicular traffic has been reported, with lines of cars stretching up to 60 kilometers from Santa Monica in Tlalnepantla. The closure began on Wednesday afternoon due to a fuel spill caused by an accident involving two trailers, one of which was at kilometer 96 near Soyaniquilpan.
According to Capufe, Civil Protection and Firefighters worked since Wednesday afternoon to clean up the fuel spill. By night, the affected area had been cleaned, but only one lane was reopened towards Querétaro. Another accident subsequently caused the road to be closed again.
Affected Roads
User reports indicate that the following roads are affected by the closure:
– Circuito Exterior Mexiquense
– Jorobas to Tula highway
– Chamapa-Lechería highway
– Tlalnepantla to Cuautitlán highway
– Cuautitlán to Huehuetoca highway
– José López Portillo Avenue, near the Perinorte junction
Trucking groups recommend that drivers heading north take the route towards Toluca and then the road to Palmillas to rejoin the Mexico-Querétaro highway.
Alternate Routes
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the Mexico-Querétaro highway to prevent getting stuck in traffic that has already lasted over 18 hours. The Cuautitlán Izcalli government has enabled the following alternate routes:
– Detour along Henry Ford Avenue towards the Cuautitlán-Tlalnepantla highway
– Detour towards Calzada de Guadalupe-Cuautitlán México
– Xhala towards the Cuautitlán-Teoloyucan highway
It is expected that traffic will return to normal once the fuel spill is fully controlled and the area is cleaned to prevent further issues.
