Traffic on the highway to Chapala was finally restored on Thursday, November 21, after a vehicle accident caused the temporary closure of this important communication route.
The incident, which occurred near Los Cedros, in the municipality of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, involved a private vehicle and a delivery truck, resulting in a fire that completely consumed the private vehicle.
According to the first reports, the accident occurred when the driver of the private vehicle, who was traveling on the high-speed lane towards Chapala, was hit head-on by a cargo truck. This crash caused the car’s gas tank to be punctured, unleashing a fire that quickly spread.
Despite the magnitude of the accident, the driver of the car managed to get out of the vehicle in time, suffering only minor burns on one of his arms. He was treated on the scene by paramedics, who confirmed that it was not necessary to transfer him to a hospital.
How did the authorities react?
After the accident, elements of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos went to the scene to put out the fire, while Municipal Police officers cordoned off the area and diverted traffic to ensure the safety of drivers.
The work to extinguish the flames and remove the damaged vehicles took several hours, which generated considerable congestion in the area. The package truck also suffered significant damage to its front, although no other injuries were reported.
For their part, the authorities have begun investigations to determine the exact causes of the accident. Hypotheses include a possible mechanical failure, distraction while driving or excessive speed as determining factors.
