A treasurer of an elementary school in San Cristóbal de las Casas was arrested and temporarily “tied up” by a group of people, who pressured her to return the amount of 90 thousand pesos that she had allegedly diverted from the resources destined for the institution.
According to local reports, the woman, identified as Ana María “N”, is the alleged person in charge of the school’s treasury, and was detained along with her husband Mauricio “N”, in an act of pressure from parents and workers at the educational center, who suspected irregularities in the administration of the funds.
The incident occurred on November 19, when the treasurer was approached by a group of people who demanded the immediate return of the 90 thousand pesos, an amount that had been destined for the improvement of the facilities and other needs of the elementary school. Under pressure, the woman and her husband agreed to deliver the money within a maximum period of 24 hours, which led to their release.
Local authorities reported that an investigation was launched to clarify the facts and verify the veracity of the allegations. Although the treasurer was released, the case continues to be monitored by educational authorities and law enforcement, who assured that they will take appropriate action if the misappropriation of funds is confirmed.
For their part, the parents expressed their discontent with the situation and asked for greater transparency in the management of the school’s resources. The educational community remains attentive to the development of this case, which has generated concern at the local level.
Finally, the couple was released by the parents, however, they were warned that if they did not comply with what they had promised, they would be detained again to face criminal proceedings. It is not yet known whether the couple has already handed over the funds.
