A 57-year-old man died of rabies from a bat bite in the municipality of Santa María Yucuhiti, in the Tlaxiaco district, in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca. This case is added to two other deaths of people infected by this virus, Oaxaca Health personnel confirmed this Friday.
The National Committee for Epidemiological Surveillance (Conave) confirmed that the cause of death of this person, on October 3, was positive for rabies from a bat bite.
This was according to the General Directorate of Epidemiology, which held a meeting and evaluated the results of the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE).
The Health Services clarified through a statement that the person who died on October 3 did not seek medical attention at the onset of symptoms.
Since the case was reported, the staff of the Zoonosis, Epidemiological Surveillance, Communicable Diseases, and Health Promotion program immediately carried out epidemiological monitoring and strengthened the prevention and control measures for rabies, in addition to applying vaccines against this virus to companion animals in that locality, where no other case has been reported.
Also, a training course on Immediate Notification of Epidemiological Surveillance Diseases was carried out, aimed at medical, nursing and paramedical staff of clinics, offices and private clinical laboratories of the Heroic City of Tlaxiaco, in addition to health professionals from Santa María Yucuhiti, in which the Epidemiological Overview of Rabies and Human Rabies was addressed, as well as generalities of Mpox (monkeypox).

The activity was carried out in conjunction with the 5th Mixteca Health Jurisdiction, directors and staff of the IMSS-Bienestar Rural Hospital of Tlaxiaco, the Health Council of this municipality and medical personnel of the demarcation.
In a community assembly, a talk was given to residents of Santa María Yucuhiti, where the importance of prevention and health promotion of human rabies and anti-rabies vaccination, canine and feline, was established.
These actions were joined by the National Service of Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica) in Oaxaca, whose agency carried out a census of ruminants in the town and surrounding areas for the application of immunologicals against rabies.
In Oaxaca there have been three deaths caused by human rabies in the last two years. A seven-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl, originally from Palo de Lima, San Lorenzo Texmelucan, in the Sierra Sur of the state, also died from a bat bite.
The deaths of this pair of siblings were recorded on December 28, 2022 and January 7, 2023, respectively, after being hospitalized for several days.
