Mexico began 2025 with the discovery of five bodies in the state of Sinaloa, where two factions of a cartel are at odds, and two more dead in the state of Guanajuato, the most violent in the country.
The five bodies were found during the early hours of January 1 in “various locations in the municipality of Culiacán,” the state capital, which has been shaken by gunfights between two groups of the Sinaloa cartel, the state prosecutor’s office reported.
The sons of Joaquín “Chapo” Guzmán, founder of that criminal organization, and who is serving a life sentence in a US prison, are at odds with the allies of Ismael “Mayo” Zambada, arrested on July 25 of last year in the United States.
These clashes have left 651 dead and 513 missing between September 9 and December 31, according to an official report cited by the Mexican newspaper La Jornada.
Attack on restaurant in Guanajuato leaves two dead
In addition, two men died during an attack on a restaurant in the state of Guanajuato.
As large as Belgium, this state records the highest number of homicides per year (3,746 in 2023, according to the official statistics institute, INEGI).
Guanajuato, an industrial and tourist corridor, where automakers such as Mazda and Toyota are based, is the scene of clashes between the powerful Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel and a local mafia known as the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel.
The governor of Guanajuato, Libia García Muñoz, announced on Wednesday the departure of the local prosecutor, Carlos Zamarripa, who had held that position for 15 years.
The decision was applauded by President Claudia Sheinbaum at her usual morning press conference.
“I think that in any case it is good that the prosecutor has already left office. It is evident that he did not do a good job,” said the president.
The president blamed the violence in that state on the local government, which comes from the conservative opposition party PAN.
