Migrants on their way to the American dream are detained daily in Baja California Sur

Between four and six irregular migrants are detected daily at the checkpoint at kilometer 36 of the La Paz-Ciudad Constitución highway, according to Manuel Cordero Esparza, representative of the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Baja California Sur.

This checkpoint, which operates 24 hours a day with the support of the National Guard, is key in the strategy of immigration containment in the state, the official explained to El Sudcaliforniano.

What happens when an irregular migrant is detained?

The official explained that when one or two migrants are detected in one day, they are taken to La Paz, their documents are taken away and they are forced to buy a return ticket to the interior of the Republic.

If the number is between eight and 12, they are transferred to the immigration station in Tijuana, Baja California, through a procedure called “estafeta,” which consists of handing over the migrants for transport to Villahermosa, Tabasco, where the deportation process is carried out.

The actual rescue is when we drive to Tijuana. The deterrence occurs when we ask them to prove the purchase of a return ticket. This strategy is 80% effective.

The most common migrants at this point come from Turkey, Venezuela, Brazil and Armenia. In addition, according to the head of the INM in the state, the presence of the checkpoint in this area has been key due to the lack of viable alternative routes to evade the review.

The checkpoint, which operates permanently 24 hours a day with the support of the National Guard, generated some controversy among citizens who considered it risky. However, Cordero Esparza assured that it is properly installed and all necessary security measures have been taken.

Impact of the new immigration policies of the United States
Regarding the impact of Donald Trump’s immigration policies, the INM representative clarified that there has not been a significant change in the migratory flows detected in Baja California Sur.
