The CJNG has complete control of Jalisco, including its police forces, says UdeG academic

The father of Héctor Daniel Flores Hernández, a young man who disappeared on May 18, 2021, claims that those who took him from his home presented themselves as agents of the Attorney General’s Office (FGJ) of Jalisco; he adds that between 70 and 80 percent of the disappearances analyzed by the Luz de Esperanza collective mention personnel from said institution involved in the crimes.

In an interview with Infobae México, Jorge Ramírez, member of the University Committee for Analysis on the Matter of Disappearance of Persons of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), emphasized that it would be impossible for the entire Jalisco police force to be on the payroll of organized crime; however, he acknowledged that commanders and police chiefs have aligned themselves with them.

Some Jalisco police officers have anonymously reported harassment and threats from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) to “pull” with them or withdraw from the area where the criminal convoy will pass: “There are many police officers who do not participate directly with the CJNG, but they have to align themselves.”

The issue of police officers on the payroll or under threats from the CJNG is related to the disappearance of eight municipal police officers and the discovery of 12 bags with human remains in Teocaltiche, so it is being investigated whether both cases are connected.

Next to the remains, a cardboard was found with the message: “This happened to me for working with Mario González Martínez,” a criminal nicknamed El Flama, who is identified as the head of operations of the Sinaloa Cartel in the Altos region of Jalisco.

“The CJNG has practically complete control of the State and although some police officers have resisted for years, it is evident that many of the corporations are under criminal control”: Jorge Ramírez.

The academic recalled that during Enrique Alfaro’s administration, investigation files were opened against 300 agents from different corporations, of which a small number were sentenced; however, this precedent forces us to reflect:

“It remains to be seen to what extent their criminal actions are due to pressure, threats or as part of the vertical orientation of the CJNG, and to what extent it is their own undertaking. Under what interest are the police acting? I have the impression that given the great impunity surrounding homicides and especially disappearances, they are also entrepreneurs of their own crimes.”
