This Friday marks Guayabera Day in the state of Yucatan, a day that not only celebrates the traditional garment’s cultural significance but also highlights its economic importance. According to the Secretary of Economy and Labor, Ermilo Barrera Novelo, the guayabera is the most significant contributor to Yucatan’s Gross Domestic Product in the textile sector.
The data reveals that at least 20 municipalities in Yucatan are dedicated to guayabera manufacturing, with products being exported to countries such as the United States, Europe, and Australia. The garment’s popularity has led manufacturers to explore new markets, including Central and South America.
Luis Gerardo González, president of the Yucatan Delegation of the National Chamber of the Apparel Industry, emphasized the significance of the guayabera in Yucatan’s economy and cultural identity. “We have a rich tradition and historical legacy that is reflected in our textile industry,” he said.
In recognition of Guayabera Day, all legislators are expected to wear a traditional guayabera during the Senate session on Friday. This celebration not only honors the garment’s cultural significance but also acknowledges its economic contribution to the state of Yucatan.
