Federal Ban: Coahuila cannot license chocolate-colored cars.

Safety in Coahuila is being affected by a federal ban that prevents the issuance of license plates to more than 2,000 legalized vehicles, which puts motorists at risk and contradicts the state’s vehicle protection strategies.

Since October 2024, the Federal Government has prevented legalized vehicles without litigation from obtaining license plates in Coahuila, generating uncertainty among thousands of drivers who have already completed the regularization process under the decree on foreign vehicles.

A problem that remains unresolved

According to the Coahuila Local Tax Administration, the lack of license plates prevents vehicle identification, which represents a public safety issue.

Vehicle identification is part of the security measures. The Federal Government’s ban goes against this strategy, leaving thousands of cars unable to circulate legally.

So far, 45,000 vehicles have obtained license plates in Coahuila, of which 27,000 are legalized vehicles. However, more than 2,000 vehicles remain without license plates, and the number continues to rise.

What is the impact of the ban?

The Public Vehicle Registry (REPUVE) has continued to regularize vehicles through litigation, but owners of vehicles without litigation have been unable to complete the process.

The lack of license plates not only affects safety but also the economy of owners, who face fines and driving restrictions.

Motorists have already paid for their regularization, but because they cannot obtain license plates, they are prone to being ticketed.

The Federal Government fails to meet the promised deadline

The Federal Government promised to resolve the situation within 90 days, but so far there has been no response or modifications to the regularization decree to allow the issuance of license plates in Coahuila.

As of October 2024, the entity stopped issuing license plates to regularized cars with notarized documents of their invoice, following the ban imposed by the Federation.

Call to the Federation to Solve the Problem

State authorities have reiterated the importance of allowing vehicle identification to strengthen security. Without license plates, these cars can be used for illegal activities without traceability, in addition to affecting owners who need to drive legally.

A response from the Federation is expected to end this process and ensure that all regularized vehicles can circulate with their documentation in order.

What are the consequences of the ban?

Increased insecurity: The lack of license plates makes it difficult to identify vehicles during security operations.
Increased violations: Motorists who have already regularized their vehicles may be fined for not having license plates.
Distrust in the regularization process: Thousands of drivers have complied with payments and paperwork, but cannot complete the process.
Economic impact: The inability to drive affects workers and families who depend on their vehicles for their daily activities.

Coahuila authorities are calling on the federal government to address this issue and allow the license plate process for legally registered vehicles to be completed. If this is not resolved, the number of unlicensed vehicles will continue to rise, posing a risk to both safety and mobility in the state.
