Safety in Coahuila is being affected by a federal ban that prevents the issuance of license plates to more than 2,000 legalized vehicles, which puts motorists at risk and contradicts the state’s vehicle protection strategies.
Since October 2024, the Federal Government has prevented legalized vehicles without litigation from obtaining license plates in Coahuila, generating uncertainty among thousands of drivers who have already completed the regularization process under the decree on foreign vehicles.
A problem that remains unresolved
According to the Coahuila Local Tax Administration, the lack of license plates prevents vehicle identification, which represents a public safety issue.

So far, 45,000 vehicles have obtained license plates in Coahuila, of which 27,000 are legalized vehicles. However, more than 2,000 vehicles remain without license plates, and the number continues to rise.

As of October 2024, the entity stopped issuing license plates to regularized cars with notarized documents of their invoice, following the ban imposed by the Federation.

State authorities have reiterated the importance of allowing vehicle identification to strengthen security. Without license plates, these cars can be used for illegal activities without traceability, in addition to affecting owners who need to drive legally.
