An intense gun battle forced students from the College of Scientific and Technological Studies (CECyTE) in Celaya, Guanajuato, to dive under their seats to stay safe from the gunfire while they alerted their families about what was happening outside their school.
According to the authorities’ report, the shooting occurred Thursday morning in an area north of Celaya, specifically on Las Torres Avenue, where National Guard members were chasing a truck that had been reported stolen.
Minutes after the intense gunfire, Pablo Muñoz Huitrón, head of the Celaya Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC), confirmed that the shooting stemmed from the theft of a tractor-trailer on the highway connecting the municipalities of Salamanca and Celaya and ruled out the possibility that the shots were directed at the school.
“Yes, I was very close to where the National Guard responded to the incident, but nothing serious happened. The shots weren’t near the school, and they weren’t even directed there. No, it was just something that happened there,” he told the media.
The situation became even more tense when some of the students shared videos on social media about the protocols they must follow when they hear gunfire near their classrooms, as we mustn’t forget that Guanajuato is the most violent state in the country.
On April 1st, Guanajuato recorded zero intentional homicides, a situation that hadn’t occurred in eight years and which Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo celebrated with reservations, emphasizing that although the trend is downward, there are still excessively violent days.
The response to the president’s statements came just one day later, when the National Security Council (CNS) confirmed, based on preliminary data, a total of 63 intentional homicides committed nationwide, 11 of which occurred in Guanajuato, once again placing it as the most violent state on April 2.
It is worth remembering that since 2018, Guanajuato has held the top spot among the states with the most recorded homicides. According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), from January 1, 2018, to February 28, 2025, 19,879 murders have been recorded in Guanajuato.
