More than 200 members of the Ministry of National Defense (Defensa) deployed a security operation to combat crime in the municipalities of Hueyapan de Ocampo and Acayucan, in southern Veracruz, following the violent incidents reported in recent days in the region.
It was reported that the crime rate in this area increased, with six homicides in the last 72 hours.
In response, federal forces led preventive patrols in coordination with the National Guard and the State Public Security Secretariats (SSPE) and the Mexican Navy (Semar).
Starting this week, the officers were sent to these municipalities to reinforce security.
Violence in Veracruz; Murders Reported, Bodies Found
In the last few hours, the Acayucan and Hueyapan de Ocampo regions have been the scene of six murders, one of them in the Oluta metropolitan area, where former Morena mayoral candidate Marte Hernández Canuto was killed.
In addition, in Hueyapan, the bodies of three people shot to death were thrown into the San Juan River in the town of Covarrubias.
These acts of violence are occurring ahead of the June 1 elections, which will see the 212 Veracruz mayoral elections up for election.
Therefore, efforts are being made to intensify patrols in this area to combat crime and reduce the incidence.
