On the morning of Sunday, May 11, piles of trash appeared in the historic center of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, despite the efforts of municipal authorities to keep the city clean. A worrying accumulation of waste was observed, especially in high-traffic areas such as the corner of 28 de Agosto and 5 de Mayo streets.
In recent days, piles of trash have been observed in broad daylight, scattered on public streets, causing discomfort and a risk of infection among passersby and merchants. The problem lies not only in the collection capacity, but also in the lack of commitment of some businesses, which take out their garbage outside of established hours, ignoring current regulations.
In light of this situation, local authorities reported that some repeat offenders have already been identified and warned that they could be fined if they continue to affect the urban image and public health. Therefore, they urge everyone to follow the recommendations; otherwise, they will face a fine.
Beyond operations and fines, the authorities’ call is clear: remove trash only when the garbage truck passes by, to avoid the formation of makeshift dumpsters that affect the environment and public health. After several hours, the waste was removed by Municipal Cleaning personnel, but during this rainy season, currents can carry trash into rivers or clog storm drains, creating puddles.
