Earthquakes shake coasts off Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos

On Tuesday, May 27, seven earthquakes were reported in the Mexican Pacific region, six of which exceeded 4.0 magnitude and one reached 3.9. The earthquakes were located off the coasts of Baja California Sur and Jalisco, with the strongest being a 5.9 magnitude event south of Cabo San Lucas.

According to the National Seismological Service, the earthquakes were concentrated in deep ocean waters, with no reports of material damage or public perception so far. Most of these events occurred within a period of less than 18 hours.

The first earthquake of the day was magnitude 4.5, recorded at 6:11 a.m. (Central Time) 365 kilometers south of Cabo San Lucas, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Subsequently, at 3:59 p.m., a 5.8 magnitude earthquake was located 388 kilometers southeast of the same location.

Minutes later, at 4:08 p.m., a 3.9 magnitude earthquake was reported 352 kilometers southwest of Puerto Vallarta. Later, at 5:29 p.m., another 4.1 magnitude earthquake originated 415 kilometers south of Cabo San Lucas.

The strongest seismic event of the day occurred at 7:30 p.m., with a magnitude of 5.9, located 372 kilometers south of Cabo San Lucas and at a depth of just 5 kilometers, prompting close monitoring by civil protection authorities.

Later that evening, two additional earthquakes were recorded: one measuring 4.3 at 10:05 p.m. and another measuring 4.2 at 10:37 p.m., both off the Pacific coast, south of Cabo San Lucas and southwest of Puerto Vallarta, respectively.

Local and federal authorities maintained active monitoring following the series of earthquakes as part of their prevention and response protocols for natural events. As of press time, no damage or evacuations have been reported.
