A video showing a large scorpion with young on its back, and a rarely seen color, went viral on social media; the animal appeared in Coahuila.

Scorpions tend to come out more during the warm season, especially in hot, dry climates, as they regulate their body temperature based on the environment, so they become more active in warm temperatures.

Blue Scorpion in Coahuila

The recent sighting of a giant scorpion in San Pedro, Coahuila, identified as Centruroides gracilis, generated a stir on social media due to its unusual size and striking blue colors.

This scorpion, which is not commonly seen in the region, sparked amazement and fear among residents and social media users.

Experts point out that these arachnids tend to emerge more frequently during warmer seasons, since, being cold-blooded, the heat stimulates their activity, especially at night.

Additionally, they seek shade, humidity, or possible shelter, which increases the chance of finding them near or inside homes. Although the sighting was unexpected, it could be related to the rising temperatures in the area.

What do scorpions carry on their backs?

Scorpions are viviparous animals, which means that, unlike spiders, their young develop inside the mother’s body rather than hatching from eggs.

Gestation can last from a few months to more than a year, depending on the species and environmental conditions.

At the time of birth, the mother uses her claws to form a kind of “basket” with which she collects her young and places them on her back, where they will remain for several days, to complete their development and undergo their first molt, finally, they will disperse to begin their independent life.
