The heavy rains recorded this Monday afternoon caused the collapse of San Luis Potosí’s Historic Center, leaving multiple roads impassable, impacting urban mobility, and posing high-risk situations for residents. The rainfall, accompanied by rapid accumulation of water on streets, avenues, and vehicle passages, led to a series of preventive closures by municipal authorities.
Among the main road closures were Río Santiago Boulevard, the Río Españita, the González Bocanegra Roundabout, the Orange Bridge, and the Manuel José Othón Bridge, considered critical points during heavy rain events. These closures caused a collapse on key arteries in the capital, with streets such as Constitución, Eje Vial, and Universidad completely shut down for several hours, making it impossible to move forward.
The situation worsened travel times for thousands of people. In several parts of the city, traffic remained at a standstill for more than two hours while drivers sought alternative routes, many of which were also backed up. The chaos even spread to areas usually less affected, due to the traffic pressure shifted from the main closed avenues.
One of the most critical incidents occurred on the Españita River, where a Route 2 urban bus, with bus number 5803, became trapped and flooded after detouring through the area due to the closure of Salvador Nava, near the Pemex Bridge. Upon entering a flooded section, the bus began to rapidly fill with water. The surprised and frightened passengers experienced moments of tension and anguish as they tried to escape. Some reported that the water reached the seats, making evacuation difficult. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but there were nervous breakdowns among passengers.
Municipal Civil Protection personnel, in coordination with traffic and emergency services, responded to various reports of stranded vehicles, homes with leaks, and people trapped in their vehicles. They also issued recommendations to the public to avoid driving in high-risk areas and to remain alert to weather updates.
Authorities continue to assess the damage and are analyzing the possibility of suspending activities in some areas if the rains persist. Citizens are urged to take extreme precautions, avoid crossing flooded rivers or overpasses, and follow official instructions in light of a meteorological phenomenon that could intensify in the coming hours.
