The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), apologized to the Government of Guatemala for the entry of Chiapas police officers into its territory to confront armed civilians on June 8.

In response to these events, the SRE explained that it sent a diplomatic note to the Government of Guatemala expressing its apologies for the events that occurred on the international border near the Cuauhtémoc-La Mesilla border crossing.

It also highlighted Mexico’s commitment to defending sovereignty.

“Likewise, (in the note) it reiterated its commitment to defending territorial sovereignty and international law to strengthen cooperation mechanisms and increase border security,” the SRE explained.

It should be noted that last Sunday, June 8, a confrontation between armed civilians and police began at the Comalapa border and spread to the town of Las Mesillas, in which four alleged attackers were killed.

According to reports, among the criminals killed was Baldemar Calderón Carrillo, alias “El Tío Baldemar,” who was the alleged boss of the Chiapas Cartel in Guatemala.

Guatemala Government Asks Mexico to Investigate the Entry of Chiapas Police into Its Territory

Hours earlier, the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that on Tuesday, June 10, it delivered a note of protest to the Foreign Ministry (SRE) in which it expressed its disagreement with the incursion of members of the Immediate Reaction Force (Pakal) into Guatemalan territory.

In a statement, the Guatemalan government stated that the entry of Chiapas police officers into an urban commercial area was carried out outside the security coordination mechanisms between the two nations, and therefore does not contribute to good relations.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the diplomatic note, expresses its protest against the incursion by members of the Immediate Reaction Force (PAKAL) of the State of Chiapas (…) it endangered the lives of civilians and does not contribute to good neighborly relations between states,” the statement stated.

During the morning press conference this Tuesday, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo spoke out regarding the entry of the Chiapas police officers and stated that they must be punished.

“Mexican forces, in this case Chiapas police, must not enter Guatemala. The sovereignty of a country cannot be violated. We do not agree, and these police officers must be punished,” she stated.

For his part, the governor of Chiapas, Eduardo Ramírez, accused Guatemalan authorities of allegedly colluding with criminal groups because they failed to respond to the confrontation.

“Regarding the regrettable events that occurred along the border with the sister Republic of Guatemala, it is very sensitive that authorities charged with ensuring the safety of their fellow citizens participate in these acts. Being in collusion is no small matter, but what is worse is being at the service of criminals,” he charged on social media.
