Donald Trump ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to pause migrant raids against the agricultural, hotel, and restaurant sectors due to the economic impact and unpopularity of the measure.
According to The New York Times, based on an email obtained and confirmed with officials, the president made the adjustment to curb criticism against him.
However, Trump’s fear is that it affects his political agenda, as it “punishes” industries and electoral constituencies whose support he wants to foster ahead of next year’s midterm elections.
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, confirmed in a statement that the president’s instructions will be followed, although she noted that they will continue their work against illegal immigrants.
(The agency will continue) working to remove the worst illegal alien criminals from the streets of the United States.
The instructions were sent Thursday to ICE, the agency in charge of carrying out the raids against migrants, which have sparked demonstrations in various cities across the United States.
(It is requested that) all law enforcement investigations and operations be suspended in agricultural workplaces (including aquaculture and meatpacking plants), restaurants, and hotels.
Trump’s reformulation of immigration policy comes after the protests in Los Angeles, California, which sparked a political and social crisis in this sanctuary state, whose economy relies on migrant labor.
Even Donald Trump himself acknowledged the impact on the aforementioned sectors and promised changes, which, according to the US media, have already happened.
We must protect our farmers but keep the CRIMINALS OUT OF THE US. Change is coming!
