Maya Train: Guatemala celebrates Mexico’s ability to benefit

Harris Whitbeck, Guatemala’s Minister of Tourism, confirmed to REPORTUR.co the interest in bringing the Maya Train to the Central American country, considering it a much-needed opportunity for connection. However, he emphasized that it will be possible as long as the Maya Biosphere Reserve is respected.

“Mexico raised the possibility of extending the Maya Train to Belize and Guatemala. President Bernardo Arévalo expressed interest in making that happen. There is a very close relationship with Mexico, and we see many opportunities there that can be exploited, considering the vital importance of preserving the Maya Biosphere Reserve, which represents 20% of Guatemala’s mega-biodiversity. So that is something we are very aware of and are taking into account,” Whitbeck told this newspaper at the IATA WOCA in Bogotá.

However, he emphasized that these are still just projections: “There’s more talk about the topic and a lot of interest, but we don’t have anything concrete yet. Guatemala needs greater connectivity and is open to exploring and exploring options. We need to think outside the box a bit. This is one of those opportunities worth exploring from a tourism perspective.”
