Alerts have been raised along the Yucatan coast due to the presence of large quantities of sargassum that have washed up on the beaches between this port and Santa Clara.
Social media reports reveal that the seaweed has covered much of the coast, jeopardizing the arrival of tourists on weekends and during the upcoming summer vacation season.
Salvador Castell, director of the scientific community “Va por la Tierra,” warned that there is a possibility of an increase in the arrival of sargassum to the Yucatan coast due to the change in weather conditions resulting from the arrival of tropical waves to the Yucatan Peninsula.
He explained that the sargassum issue is related to rising sea temperatures and the rains that generate movement on the seabed, causing the sargassum to begin to rise to the surface, where it stagnates until it decomposes.
Meanwhile, service providers at these ports indicated that the arrival of sargassum was earlier this year, and it will remain on the beach for several weeks until it disintegrates naturally.
However, service providers are concerned about the possibility of an increase in the amount of the algae in the coming days, as currents could carry it from the Caribbean Sea to the coast of Yucatán.
