As part of World Tree Day, members of the Southern Zone and Wetlands Council in San Cristóbal de Las Casas launched a reforestation campaign in the Jovel Valley, taking advantage of the rainy season to plant hundreds of trees.

Nicolás Gómez Velasco, a representative of the environmentalists, reported that this campaign aims to strengthen ecosystems, promote biodiversity, and raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment. He explained that, although World Tree Day is celebrated every June 28th, reforestation work will continue during this season.

The activity was carried out in strategic areas of the southern zone and wetlands, specifically in the Anexo Altos de María Auxiliadora neighborhood, with the participation of families, volunteers, environmental organizations, local and state authorities, and citizens. During the event, native species were planted to contribute to soil recovery, watershed management, and the protection of wildlife.

Gómez Velasco reiterated that these actions are part of a commitment to sustainable reforestation, selecting native species to ensure their adaptation and growth. He also highlighted the importance of protecting wetlands, which are essential for the region’s water and climate balance.

Finally, he called on the people of San Cristóbal to join these initiatives for the benefit of the planet, noting that reforestation work will continue as part of their environmental work to protect natural resources.
