The heroism of two young Mexican women has been hailed after they managed to save 20 girls during intense flooding that hit a summer camp in Texas. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, July 4, at a summer camp in Kerr County, Texas, where the girls were working as counselors. The sudden storm caused nearby rivers to overflow and left the girls trapped in grave danger.

“I thought I was in a dream; I didn’t believe it was real. I never understood the gravity of the situation until we left in the Navy trucks,” revealed one of the survivors.

The 19-year-old Mexican women, identified as Silvana Garza Valdez and María Paula Zárate, revealed in an interview that the rain began during the night, but intensified in the early hours until the Guadalupe River overflowed its banks.

Both mentioned that the rain caused the windows to shake due to the loud thunder.

“The windows shook with the thunder and the lightning was very intense, it was like a movie, I’d never seen anything like it,” said Silvana Garza.

The Emergency Situation

The camp, which housed girls of different ages, began to be hit by heavy rains, causing nearby rivers to rapidly overflow their banks. The young Mexican women, who were aware of the situation, reacted quickly as the storm intensified. Faced with a lack of communication with local authorities due to the rapidity of the flooding, the counselors decided to act on their own.

The Heroic Rescue

Despite the fear and confusion caused by the rising waters, the two young women did not hesitate to risk their own lives to save the girls in their care. One of the counselors, who was with a group of girls in a lower area of the camp, managed to get them to higher ground while her colleague organized the rescue of the others.
