After a 34% occupancy rate in June, small hotels in Playa del Carmen expect to reach 50% during the summer season, according to Offner Arjona, president of the Small Hotels Association.
“We are very hopeful that occupancy will improve. We have been struggling with the issue of very low rates, but the expectation is that occupancy will rise,” Arjona indicated.
He added that the goal is to increase the number of occupied rooms in small hotels, which is why they are working with the municipal government and business associations to address the causes that have led to the drop in tourist arrivals, such as the massive grounding of sargassum.
“It’s an issue that will stay with us, and we need to work in an organized manner to address it over time, and not wait for the sargassum to arrive,” he said.
