The mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, explained why she decided to remove the statues of Fidel Castro and Che Guevara that stood in a park in the Tabacalera neighborhood.
In an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva on Radio Fórmula, she pointed out that irregularities were found in the purchase of the sculptures, which cost 600,000 pesos, and that city hall employees were also implicated.
“The statues were purchased in 2017 using funds from the 5000 budget, which is earmarked exclusively for the purchase of machinery, by then-delegate Ricardo Monreal. It cost 600,000 pesos,” she explained.
“Later, two rank-and-file workers, whom we spoke with yesterday and who appear in the registry as guards, were coerced by the government to appear as those in charge of these sculptures.”
The mayor stated that there had been constant, long-standing petitions from residents to remove the “Encuentro Monument,” which depicts the two figures of the Cuban Revolution.
There are even more than 15,000 signatures on the change.org platform with the petition, she specified.
“They are demanding decent spaces, spaces for children, playgrounds, improvements to the Tabacalera park, and the use of the benches not to pay homage to two dictators, like these two men, but rather benches for residents,” she noted.
“We know that these two men are guilty of murdering 5,000 politicians, people who thought differently, of creating concentration camps, of co-opting communities.”
What will happen to the statues of Fidel and Che Guevara?
De la Vega mentioned that she is still evaluating what will happen to the statues, but is considering auctioning them off to recoup the money invested in them.
She also said that statues of Mexican heroines could be placed in their place.
“Today I woke up thinking about what we could do with the statues. They’re in good storage, in a warehouse, and belong to the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office,” he explained.
“Today I was just thinking about putting Mexican heroines or civilians there, but as for the statues, a good idea is to auction them off, because they cost the residents a lot. Then we could auction them off, and finally the communists will use their money and not someone else’s. With that money, we can fix up the Tabacalera park and benefit the residents.”
