Thousands remain without water in San Cristóbal de Las Casas

Residents of several neighborhoods in San Cristóbal de Las Casas are once again facing prolonged outages in their drinking water supply due to a failure in the Municipal Drinking Water and Sewerage System (SAPAM).

According to the agency, the interruption was caused by a malfunction in the pump that supplies the tank in the Fátima neighborhood, primarily affecting neighborhoods in the southwest of the city. Among the areas without service are La Raza, El Mirador, CBTIS 92, Valle de Huitepec, Fátima, and others.

SAPAM personnel reported that maintenance work is underway and that the pump is being replaced with a new 40-horsepower unit. However, the restoration of service is not expected until after July 15, with no definitive date yet.

Faced with this situation, residents have had to resort to purchasing drinking water trucks, which cost up to 500 pesos, generating discontent and protests in some areas.

“We are doing everything possible to restore service as soon as possible; we apologize for the inconvenience this causes,” the utility said in a statement.

Meanwhile, affected residents are demanding that repairs be expedited and that free water tanker supplies be guaranteed, as they consider it unfair to have to pay extra for an essential resource that should be available continuously.
