The municipal government of Cortazar, Guanajuato, deeply regretted the death of Alejandro ‘N’, a 14-year-old boy who was dragged by crocodiles in a marshland in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. The local government expressed its condolences to the family: “We join in the grief of his loved ones and reaffirm our support and solidarity in these difficult times.”
The incident occurred on Friday, July 18, shortly after 1:00 p.m., while the minor was on vacation with his family in the coastal region known as Barra de Santana. According to rescuers, the teenager attempted to jump from one bridge to another, lost his balance, and fell into the water.
Within seconds, several crocodiles violently attacked him and submerged him. His family, who witnessed the incident, were unable to intervene due to the speed of the attack. The minor, originally from Cortazar and known for working as an altar boy in his community, immediately disappeared into the water.
After being alerted, authorities launched a search operation that included small boats and dozens of residents scouring the mangrove area. However, after 72 hours of unsuccessful searching, the search was suspended this Sunday, July 20. Authorities were unable to find the child’s remains, and it is feared that his body may have been completely devoured by the reptiles.
This attack is not the first reported in the estuary. Months earlier, another person was also the victim of a crocodile attack in the same area. In light of these events, port authorities issued an urgent call to the public to avoid entering or approaching bodies of water where dangerous wildlife has been detected.
What was supposed to be a family vacation ended up turning into a tragedy that has shocked communities in both Michoacán and Guanajuato.
