President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her government is considering imposing sanctions on chicken and pork leg exports from the United States, following the 17 percent tax on Mexican tomatoes imposed by the US administration.

At her morning press conference at the National Palace, the president stated that Mexico seeks dialogue, not confrontation, with its northern neighbor, but acknowledged that the possibility of applying such sanctions is being studied.

“Everything is under review. Obviously, we don’t want to enter into any confrontation with the United States government; it’s not in anyone’s interest. We have to be responsible about that. We also want them to respect Mexico. My fundamental task as president is to protect the people of Mexico and our nation, and we are seeking the best decisions to move forward,” she emphasized.
“But about these sanctions against the market regarding chicken and pork legs? So, are they being analyzed?”

“Yes, everything is being analyzed,” she responded.

From the Treasury Department, the head of the Executive Branch stated that this week, options for tomato marketing, as well as for livestock farmers, will be presented. She emphasized the importance of strengthening the domestic market for tomatoes and meat.

“So, it is very important to strengthen, in any case, our country’s meat production for the domestic market, as well as for tomatoes, since tomatoes are exported and we couldn’t consume all the tomatoes that are exported.”

“The United States, as we said, will continue to import Mexican tomatoes because it lacks the production capacity to produce the tomatoes consumed, and there is also the quality of the tomatoes, which has been improving for export needs,” she noted.
