Residents and business owners in the Historic Center urged authorities to mitigate the processes of displacement and gentrification in the area.
The Third Anti-Gentrification Protest will take place tomorrow, departing from the Hemiciclo a Juárez (Juarez City Hall) and heading to the U.S. Embassy.
Business owners in the First District warned that in recent years, there have been displacements of residents, businesses, and jobs due to the growth of warehouses that store products from Asia and the informal sector.
Business owner José Luis Santiago stated that more than 600 warehouses have been counted.
Vicente Gutiérrez, president of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism of Mexico City, urged government measures to address products entering the country illegally.
“That’s also gentrification. They’re pushing out Mexicans, Chinese products are coming in, and no one, no one, has paid the proper attention. We need to be more serious and decisive in combating this crime of smuggling,” he said.
He recalled that relabeling to simulate “Made in Mexico” has been reported.
“We haven’t seen any action against the smuggling of Chinese products from storage or relabeling. Things remain the same. Sometimes, even with the acquiescence of the police, they are unloading trucks and even trailers of these products from Asia, without anyone or anything starting an operation to determine if they are legal.
“We don’t understand why Mexico City authorities aren’t taking action against this scourge that is a cancer for Mexico’s economy: informality and the smuggling of Chinese products,” he added.
Gerardo Cleto López Becerra, president of ConComercioPequeño, emphasized that the authorities’ attention is urgently needed, as the value of taxes has gone from 3,000 pesos to more than 50,000 pesos.
“The authorities are responsible for this displacement when they allow the entry of Asian merchandise, which is much cheaper, they are working against local merchants, when they don’t check at customs and allow the entry of this Chinese garbage,” he emphasized.
