Iván Escalante, head of the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), warned that it is illegal for establishments to charge a fee for card payments.

During President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning press conference this Monday, April 28, at the National Palace, Escalante called on consumers to report these practices.

“It is indeed illegal to charge these types of fees, because the fee the bank charges the establishment should be borne by the establishment, not the consumer. Therefore, it is established in the Federal Consumer Protection Law […],” he said, highlighting that surveillance and suspension activities have been carried out.

“I urge consumers that if they detect this type of behavior, or if an establishment, for example a restaurant, charges them a tip directly or fails to provide them with a bill, they should let us know. We will support them,” said Iván Escalante.
