Tamaulipas will face four more heat waves; health risks warned

Health authorities in Tamaulipas have confirmed that four heat waves are expected in the coming months, which will keep the population on alert.

This was stated by the Director of State Epidemiology, Sergio Eduardo Uriegas, who emphasized that they are constantly monitoring reports from the National Water Commission (Conagua) to issue the appropriate alerts if necessary.

Which municipalities have the most cases of heat stroke?

So far, up to 20 cases of heat stroke have been reported so far this year. Although the number has decreased compared to previous periods, the last report of heat stroke was in May.

An environmentalist assures that the proposal will allow both people and animals to cool off.
Regarding the distribution of cases by municipality, Uriegas explained that Nuevo Laredo is the locality with the highest incidence, with 12 people affected, followed by Reynosa with 10 cases.

Other municipalities, such as Ciudad Mante, have reported eight cases, while Tampico has registered four. “Fortunately, we haven’t had any more cases in recent weeks, but we remain vigilant,” said Uriegas.

To date, two deaths associated with high temperatures have been confirmed, occurring in the municipalities of Tampico and Altamira.

Recommendations for dealing with heat waves in Tamaulipas
A heat wave is defined as a prolonged period of extremely high temperatures that exceed the normal average for a given region. In Tamaulipas, especially in the south of the state, the average temperature during the months of July and August ranges between 25° and 35°C. When temperatures consistently exceed this range, it is considered a heat wave.

Although the hot weather still persists, the Director of Epidemiology warned that we must be prepared for the arrival of heat waves, which are forecast to occur between now and October. “Heat waves can occur at any time,” he said.

“Through coordination with Conagua, we receive information about the risks, and as soon as the arrival of a prolonged heat wave is confirmed, we activate the epidemiological surveillance protocol and, if necessary, issue an alert to the population,” explained Uriegas.

The Tamaulipas Ministry of Health has issued a series of recommendations to mitigate the effects of extreme heat. The main measures include:

Maintain adequate hydration, especially with plain water.

Avoid physical activity during the hours of intense heat.

Avoid sugary and alcoholic beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.

“It is crucial that the population be informed and take the necessary precautions to avoid heat exhaustion, a risk that can be very serious if not acted upon in a timely manner,” concluded Uriegas, noting that Tamaulipas will still face four more heat waves.
