A 5.9 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean shook the border between Guatemala and Mexico on Saturday, with no casualties or damage reported so far, seismological services reported.

The Central American country has been hit in recent weeks by a series of strong earthquakes that have left nearly a dozen dead and thousands affected.

Saturday’s earthquake was recorded at 2:40 p.m. local time (8:40 p.m. GMT) 101 km southwest of the Guatemalan coastal city of Champerico, on the maritime border between the two countries, and at a depth of 9 km, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED), in charge of civil protection in Guatemala, has not reported any injuries or damage from the quake, which was felt primarily in the west of the country.

On July 8, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake left seven dead, some 15,000 affected, and 2,170 homes damaged in the department of Sacatepéquez, near Guatemala City (central Guatemala).

Two other people died in earthquakes measuring 5.6 and 5.3 in late July in the department of Jutiapa, on the border with El Salvador.
