A video captured in Gómez Palacio, Durango, has sparked a heated debate on social media. The images, which quickly went viral, show a minor, between 12 and 14 years old, driving a public transportation bus on the “Cereso” route while passengers watched. This is how the moment unfolded.
The incident sparked immediate reactions. Several internet users pointed out the seriousness of allowing a minor to drive a public transportation vehicle, highlighting the risk to the minor and the passengers on board.
What was the timing of the incident?
It shows the child struggling to maneuver the vehicle’s steering wheel, straining to look at the road ahead, and stretching his legs to reach the pedals. In the front seat, near the door, an adult can be seen, who, according to authorities, is the regular driver.
According to Mexican Traffic Regulations, allowing a minor to operate a motor vehicle constitutes a serious offense that can result in financial penalties, suspension or revocation of a driver’s license, and even administrative arrest in extreme cases. These provisions apply more stringently to public transportation units, given the high level of responsibility involved in transporting passengers.
The controversy reached such a level that the Durango Undersecretary of Mobility and Transportation issued a statement confirming that the minor is the son of the regular driver of unit 045. According to Undersecretary Rafael Valentín Aragón, the driver allowed the child to take the wheel “for a few moments,” which he described as an “irresponsible decision” and a direct violation of the Transportation Law.
“These types of actions put everyone’s lives at risk. There is no justification for allowing a minor to drive, much less a passenger unit,” Aragón stated.
As a result, the driver was fined and the vehicle was taken off the road to be impounded. The authority also reminded drivers that the permit to operate public transportation is exclusive to properly trained and certified drivers, and that any violation of this rule will be punished exemplarily.
The case of a child caught driving a passenger bus in Durango continues to generate debate on social media, with some calling for harsher penalties and the implementation of random inspections to ensure that transportation operators comply with the law.
