In a statement issued on August 8, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) emphasized that security cooperation between Mexico and the United States is based on the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty, trust, and shared responsibility.

In response to statements by the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson—who affirmed that both nations maintain a united front against drug trafficking—the SRE emphasized that “Mexico would not accept the participation of US military forces on our territory.”

The ministry explained that the National Security Strategy seeks to build peace with justice, addressing the structural causes of violence, and combating illicit drug and arms trafficking, in coordination with US authorities.

Johnson issued his position following a New York Times report that President Donald Trump had signed a memorandum authorizing military action against certain smuggling networks. “Our message is clear: we are united. We will use all the tools at our disposal to protect our people, working as two sovereign allies,” the diplomat stated.

The Foreign Ministry reiterated that bilateral dialogue and cooperation without subordination are essential to protecting the communities of both countries.
