Renowned artists from the musical and performing arts worlds will gather on August 17th at 5:30 p.m. at El Cantoral (Roberto Cantoral Cultural Center, Coyoacán) for a charity concert aimed at supporting the Afro-Mexican communities of the Costa Chica region of Oaxaca and Guerrero, severely affected by Hurricane Erika.

The “Concert for the Costa Chica” is an initiative convened by artists Susana Harp and Alejandra Robles, which seeks to raise awareness and funds for communities facing a humanitarian crisis, especially in Corralero, a fishing community where 95% of the population is Afro-descendant. Prominent artists such as Regina Orozco, Horacio Franco, Astrid Hadad, Celso Duarte, María Inés Ochoa, Alejandra Duarte, and the group Alma Cimarrona, as well as Afro-Mexican dance companies, have joined the call.

“Hurricane Erick hit entire communities hard. Corralero was particularly hard hit. This concert seeks not only to provide economic assistance, but also to recognize the dignity and cultural richness of Afro-Mexican communities,” said Susana Harp, also highlighting the importance of the constitutional recognition achieved in 2019 for these communities.

Singer and actress Regina Orozco emphasized the urgency of the support:

“The hurricane devastated homes, work equipment, and lives. Music is what we know how to do, so we’re going to put that at the service of the people. None of the artists will be paid a peso, nor will El Cantoral. All proceeds will go directly to the communities.”

Orozco also emphasized the need to highlight underserved regions in the media:

“The Costa Chica region doesn’t have the exposure that places like Acapulco or Oaxaca City have. This concert is also an act of justice and recognition.”

A night of music, love, and solidarity

During the show, the audience will enjoy a diverse repertoire that includes cumbias, boleros, rancheras, and traditional pieces from Afro-Mexican and baroque culture, such as the chaconas performed by Horacio Franco. There will be dancing, singing, and an atmosphere of solidarity and celebration.

“As Susana Harp says, let’s open our hearts… and also our wallets. It’s time to help,” concluded Regina Orozco, inviting the audience to experience an unforgettable evening.

Admission by donation

Access to the concert is by voluntary donation, and all proceeds will be channeled directly to affected communities on the Costa Chica. The event is on Saturday, August 17, at 5:30 p.m. at El Cantoral, located in the Roberto Cantoral Cultural Center, Coyoacán.
