In the heart of Chenalhó, Chiapas, a stone is causing a sensation. It’s not just any stone. It seems to have sparked all kinds of speculation and even shaken the faith of dozens of Catholic faithful, who considered it a religious apparition.
It all began after a neighbor claimed to have found a rock in the field that, to the surprise of many, bears the silhouette—or at least the most impressive optical illusion—of the Virgin of Guadalupe. From that moment on, this stone ceased to be a simple mineral and became a local celebrity.
In her home, people have already lit candles, placed flowers, and bowed to her worthy of a miraculous apparition. Some neighbors couldn’t resist visiting to contemplate the “stone miracle” in the hope of receiving blessings or perhaps a little divine inspiration.
Miracle or optical illusion?
However, not all residents are convinced it’s a miracle and instead wonder if it’s a case of pareidolia, that curious ability of the human mind to see familiar faces or figures in everyday objects.
What is clear is that this story not only tests faith, but also the community’s creativity and sense of humor. Furthermore, this isn’t the first time a supposed Marian apparition, as sightings of the Virgin Mary are called, has occurred in Mexico.
Examples of this kind of phenomenon abound, for example, the case of the Virgin of Hidalgo Metro Station, or that image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that appeared in a tortilla a few years ago. The truth is that faith moves mountains and is capable of making even the most skeptical see beyond the obvious.
