Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport (AICM) indicated in a statement that landings and takeoffs were suspended starting at 2:13 a.m. while work was carried out to remove accumulated rainwater from the operational area.

A federal official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment, told news agencies and media outlets that one of the airport’s runways reopened after 6:00 a.m., but the rest of the airport remained closed.

A similar situation occurred at AICM between Sunday and Monday after heavy rainfall that lasted for several hours and reached 57 millimeters at the airport, according to city authorities. On that occasion, nearly 100 flights and nearly 15,000 passengers were affected.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada reported that on Sunday in the Zócalo, the capital’s main square, rainfall reached 84.5 millimeters, a historic record that surpassed the 1952 record of 67 millimeters in that area.

“In 20 minutes, 50 millimeters (of rain) fell, meaning there was a very large concentration of rainfall in a very short period of time, which caused many problems,” Brugada told the press on Monday.
