This Tuesday afternoon, a Maya Train train derailed in the town of Izamal, Yucatán. The incident occurred on Section 3 of the route, where one of the cars detached after losing contact with the track. So far, authorities have not reported any injuries and only material damage.
Videos are circulating on social media showing passengers being evacuated by National Guard personnel, while several people remain outside the car. The incident occurred during the holiday season, raising concerns among transportation users.
The company has yet to issue an official statement.
So far, the company in charge of operating the Maya Train has not issued an official statement on the causes of the derailment or on the measures it will take to ensure passenger safety on future trips.
The Profitability of the Maya Train
The federal government, through President Claudia Sheinbaum, has stated that the Maya Train is a profitable project and that its design is intended to generate profits in the medium and long term.
In July 2024, Sheinbaum explained that, in this initial stage, the main focus is on passenger transportation, as the full fleet of trains is not yet in operation due to ongoing construction. She also indicated that, once freight train service is enabled, revenues will increase, consolidating the project’s profitability.
The Maya Train’s Losses Continue to Increase
During the first half of 2024, the Maya Train’s operating losses doubled compared to previous periods. This increase occurs while the project continues to expand its operations, which has generated higher costs for maintenance, personnel, and logistics.
