An angry mob set fire to the Tzucacab Municipal Palace during a peaceful demonstration demanding justice for the death of Ángel A.Ch.
Residents of the municipality located in southern Yucatán took to the streets on Thursday night, August 21, to demand justice for the death of the father, whose death was announced Tuesday morning after he had been arrested the night before.
Relatives accuse police officers of Ángel A.’s death.
The protesters blame the municipal police for the death of the detainee, although the official circumstances of his death have not yet been released.
Amid cries of “Justice!” and “No more abuse!”, residents demanded the presence of state representatives to clarify the case, as they claim they do not trust the local authorities.
After the protests escalated, a group of people broke down the door of the council chamber and took some of the furniture to the ground floor of the Municipal Palace. They then set fire to the interior of the building.
No arrests have been made yet for the riots, nor has an official report on the damage.
Members of the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) and the National Defense Force (Sedeña) responded to the scene to extinguish the fire and control the crowd.
To date, the City Council, headed by Erick Ku Caamal, has not issued any statement regarding the death of the detained citizen, nor the fire that was started on its premises.
According to unofficial reports, the municipal police officers in charge of guarding the public prison reported the death of Ángel A. Ch. on Tuesday morning, after allegedly finding him suspended from a rope inside his cell.
