Hollywood’s attention could be drawn to Sonora, as its desert landscapes and impressive coastline make it a top-tier film location. Now, the possibility of Pedro Pascal filming a movie in Sonora has emerged.

Recently, there have been reports in the entertainment media about the possibility of Pedro Pascal, one of today’s most beloved actors, starring in an ambitious project directed by Todd Haynes.

WHAT FILM IS PEDRO PASCAL FILMING IN SONORA?

The project is titled “De Noche” (By Night) and tells the story of a gay couple who move from Los Angeles to Mexico to start a new life.

Joaquin Phoenix was initially slated for the lead role, but after his unexpected departure, rumors suggest that Pedro Pascal could take on the role. According to international media reports, Danny Ramírez would accompany the Chilean actor in the film.

Sonora’s Secretary of Tourism, Roberto Gradillas, explained that the state government had already begun negotiations with the production team even before Phoenix’s departure.

“This is undoubtedly a great opportunity for Sonora’s projection. We have been working on it as part of an instruction from Governor Alfonso Durazo,” he noted.

For local authorities, the film represents a unique opportunity to put Sonora on the international cinematic map.

WHY DID JOAQUIN PHOENIX LEAVE THE PROJECT?

In August 2024, just five days before filming began, Phoenix abandoned the project, leaving dozens of people jobless and production temporarily suspended. When questioned about his departure, the actor responded:

“I would simply be sharing my opinion, and the other creatives aren’t here to share theirs. I don’t think that’s the right thing to do. I don’t think it would be helpful, so I simply won’t do it. Thank you.”

To date, the exact reason for his decision has not been clarified, although there is speculation that his withdrawal may have been due to his decision not to portray a gay character on the big screen.

Pedro Pascal’s participation in this film would have a major impact not only on the local industry but also on the career of the Chilean-American actor, who has gained worldwide recognition for his roles in The Mandalorian and The Last of Us.

Para las autoridades locales, la película representa una ventana única para colocar a Sonora en el mapa cinematográfico internacional
