Hotel occupancy was moderate in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

The summer vacation season closed with moderate numbers for the hotel sector in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, reported Verónica Alcántara, president of the city’s Hotel Association. In an interview, the union representative detailed that weekday occupancy levels averaged 35%, with a recovery on weekends that allowed occupancy to reach 60% on Fridays and Saturdays.

Comparison

These data, she stated, are consistent with reports from the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) and the Ministry of Tourism.

Alcántara explained that the tourism that visited the magical town was predominantly regional and national, with a minimal presence of international visitors. One phenomenon that caught her attention, she said, was the number of tourists who tour the city during the day but do not stay there.

“We really see a surge of tourists coming, spending the entire morning at our destination and returning to their hometowns like Tuxtla, Comitán, or Ocosingo. Therefore, occupancy has been relatively low,” she noted.

Economic Impact

Regarding the economic impact, the hotel industry confirmed a trend noted by other sectors: visitors are spending less. “The tourists who visited us spend less, hardly spend time in formal local establishments, and the resources we have managed have been lower,” she indicated.
