During the 51st Regular Session of the National Public Security Council, chaired by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal Anaya, affirmed that addressing security is a daily task in the state. The meeting also highlighted that Tamaulipas has seen a 49.3 percent decrease in intentional homicide.
“Undoubtedly, this has been a daily task in our state, and we can never say it’s a finished project. Instead, it’s done day by day, and with increasing efforts to make progress with small variations in numbers, even though substantial progress has already been made at some point,” he stated.
As part of the work of this Council, held at the National Palace, the Tamaulipas governor also supported the approval of the National Agreement to Strengthen Public Security Institutions and the National Agreement for the Search for Missing Persons.
In her presentation, Villarreal Anaya highlighted that, thanks to coordination with the Federal Government’s security cabinet, homicides, femicides, kidnappings, and highway robbery have been reduced in Tamaulipas. She also submitted studies conducted in Tamaulipas to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System to determine where crimes originate and occur.
Tamaulipas records a 49.3% decrease in intentional homicides
Presenting data on crime rates for the period from January to August 2024, compared to the same period in 2025, Marcela Figueroa Franco, Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System, explained that Tamaulipas recorded a 49.3 percent decrease in intentional homicides, highlighting it as one of the states that has achieved the best results.
He also mentioned that, in Tamaulipas, vehicle theft in the period from January to July 2024, compared to the same period in 2025, registered a 27.3 percent decrease. Violent vehicle theft decreased by 44.3 percent, and non-violent vehicle theft decreased by 17.1 percent.
For his part, Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), explained that in the first 11 months of Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, there has been a 25 percent reduction in intentional homicides in the country. He also reported that 30,700 people have been arrested for high-impact crimes; more than 240 tons of drugs have been seized; 15,500 weapons have been confiscated; and 1,356 drug laboratories have been dismantled.
In addition to the governors of all the states and the head of government of Mexico City, the following also participated in the 51st regular session of the National Public Security Council: Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, Secretary of the Interior; Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, Secretary of Defense; Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, Secretary of the Navy; Alejandro Gertz Manero, head of the Attorney General’s Office; Ernestina Godoy Ramos, legal advisor to the Presidency of the Republic; Hernán Cortés Hernández, commander of the National Guard; and Rosario Piedra Ibarra, president of the National Human Rights Commission.
