The Tlaxcala House of Crafts (CAT) has announced the call for entries for the 13th State Plant Fiber Competition 2025. The competition aims to recognize the talent of the state’s artisans, who disseminate and preserve artisanal techniques that give the state its cultural identity.

Artisans dedicated to creating pieces with plant fibers using traditional techniques and designs, as well as new design proposals, may register. The competition includes two categories: A) Hard fibers (rods) and B) Semi-hard fibers (ixtle, sotol palm, pine needle, tule).

Those interested may register a single piece from September 1st to 30th at the CAT facilities, located at 1 Emilio Sánchez Piedras Avenue in downtown Tlaxcala, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The director of the CAT, Saul Pérez Bravo, explained that this contest is part of the state’s strategy to support the artisan sector, encourage the production of pieces, open new marketing opportunities, and motivate creators to continue their traditional and innovative practices, with the goal of helping Tlaxcala’s folk art become a driving force of cultural and economic development for the communities.

“Trades such as weaving with plant fibers, pottery, and wood carving make up the intangible cultural heritage of the state, and are safeguarded thanks to the talent of women and men who have passed on their knowledge through community and family life,” he stated.

Registration requires submitting two color copies of official identification and CURP (Tax Identification Number) on a single sheet of paper, as well as a copy of a bank statement in the name of the participant.

The contest will award recognition and financial incentives to the winners in each category, in addition to a special award for the best piece and five honorable mentions.
