Shopping for groceries has become a tactical mission for many families. And with prices as they are, knowing which supermarkets to visit can mean the difference between making ends meet or going broke.
That’s why Profeco conducted a national study to tell us which are the cheapest supermarkets for grocery shopping in Mexico. Keep reading “Where to Go” to tell you which ones are best for your wallet.
What exactly did Profeco review about supermarkets?
The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) compared the price of basic food baskets in different supermarkets across the country.
The study includes 24 essential products for an average Mexican family and segments the results by region.
And although they didn’t detail all the brands, they did reveal the final prices for the complete package.
The Cheapest Supermarkets in Mexico
Here are the top 3 supermarkets nationwide with the cheapest basic groceries, according to the most recent Profeco review:

What products does the basic basket include?
According to Profeco, these are the 24 items typically considered for analysis:
Edible vegetable oil (1 946 ml bottle)
Rice (1 kg)
Flaked tuna (2 140 g cans, max. 5% soy)
Standard sugar (1 kg)

The one you’d better avoid if you want to save your paycheck:
H.E.B. Ejército – Tampico, Tamaulipas
Price: $1,045.80 MXN
That’s $285.10 pesos more than at Chedraui in Aguascalientes. For the same groceries, you pay almost a third more. Watch out!
Why does all this matter?
The basic food basket represents more than 13% of the INPC (National Consumer Price Index), so it directly influences inflation and what you can or cannot afford each month.
Furthermore, these products are not luxuries: they are the basis of food and household cleaning supplies. So, if you can save more than 250 pesos by shopping in the right place, it’s worth changing your route.
