Mexico City’s mayoral offices are preparing their Independence Day celebrations. This year’s program includes dances and concerts open to the general public in the capital’s districts and the traditional Grito ceremony, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum from the capital’s Zócalo. Here’s what you need to know about the 2025 national celebrations and recommendations for attending Mexican Night in the mayoral offices.
Sheinbaum’s First Grito as President
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will give her first Grito de Independencia at around 11:00 p.m. on Monday, September 15. Sheinbaum will be the first woman to lead this ceremony from the capital’s Zócalo, which recreates the speeches of priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla calling the people to rise up in arms against Spanish rule on September 16, 1810.
During the celebration in the Zócalo, a free concert by the Arrolladora Banda el Limón is also expected, as well as performances by Alejandra Ávalos and the group Legado de Grandeza. The musical events will begin around 8:00 p.m.
Mexican Night Celebrations in Mexico City
The national celebrations in Mexico City will begin on the afternoon of Monday, September 15, on the esplanades of the various boroughs. Dances, concerts, street parties, and sales of typical seasonal foods are expected.
Álvaro Obregón
The mayor’s office will kick off the Fiestas Patrias (National Holidays) with a popular festival starting at 2:00 p.m. on the corner of 10th Street and Canario Street in the Tolteca neighborhood. The festivities include dancing, music, and traditional dishes.
Azcapotzalco
Azcapotzalco is preparing a dance with guest artists such as Willie González, Pequeños Musical, and the son jarocho band Siquisirí, as well as mariachi and sound systems. The event will take place on the mayor’s office esplanade starting at 3:00 p.m. The Grito de Independencia (Cry of Independence) will follow at 10:00 p.m. A boxing match featuring young talents has also been announced for 1:00 p.m. on September 15th in Parque Hundido, located at 155 Castilla Oriente Street, in the Los Reyes neighborhood.
Benito Juárez
In this district, Fiestas Patrias (National Holidays) will be celebrated with a concert by Moenia and a performance by Mariachi Gama 1000 on the city hall esplanade starting at 6:00 p.m. The city hall has also announced a popular festival and live performances by rock, norteño, and other artists.
Coyoacán
In Coyoacán, the festivities will take place in the Jardín Hidalgo with a performance by Alberto Barros, El Gigante de la Salsa. There will also be a dance by Daniel y su Maracombo, Sofi Saar, and Kapsula. This will be followed by the traditional Grito de Independencia (Cry of Independence) at dusk.
Cuajimalpa de Morelos
Cuajimalpa will celebrate Independence Day with a traditional pilgrimage from September 12 to 15. Road closures are expected on Avenida Juárez and Avenida México. The mayor’s office has also announced the suspension of alcohol sales and consumption from midnight on September 15th until 2:00 p.m. on the 16th in all commercial establishments.
Cuauhtémoc
The Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office will celebrate with Banda el Recodo, Julio Preciado, and other artists on the district’s esplanade starting at 5:00 p.m.
Gustavo A. Madero
Nicky Jam and Remmy Valenzuela will perform on the GAM esplanade starting at 6:00 p.m. In addition, gradual road closures are expected on streets around the district’s perimeter starting at 11:00 p.m. on September 14th. Only accredited vehicles will be allowed to enter on the 15th, and traffic will resume at the end of the event.
Iztapalapa
Starting at 10:00 a.m., the public will be able to enjoy the traditional open-air dance, a fair, and the crowning of the Fiestas Patrias queen. The mayor’s office has announced a concert with guest artists such as El Yaki, Mariachi de América de Jesús Rodríguez de Híjar, Grupo Dinastía González, and Juanma. The traditional Grito will begin at 11:00 p.m. on the city hall esplanade.
Iztapalapa
On the afternoon of September 12, Mayor Aleida Álvarez announced the cancellation of the popular open-air dance scheduled for the evening of September 15 at the Macroplaza in solidarity with the victims of the gas pipeline explosion at the Puente de la Concordia Bridge. The Grito ceremony will take place at 10:00 p.m. on the city hall esplanade.
Magdalena Contreras
In this district, a dance by the La Ejecutiva Band is expected on the city hall esplanade. The civic parade and the traditional Independence Parade are also scheduled to begin at that same location on Monday, September 15, starting at 9:00 a.m.
Miguel Hidalgo
The Miguel Hidalgo Municipality will celebrate with Heidy Infante’s Nueva Sonora Dinamita on the Municipality esplanade starting at 6:00 PM.
Milpa Alta
Milpa Alta will celebrate starting at 7:30 PM with singer David Zahan at an event commemorating Frankie Ruiz.
Tláhuac
Tláhuac is preparing a celebration for the election of a representative for the national holidays on September 14 at 4:00 PM on the Municipality esplanade.
Tlalpan
In Tlalpan, the national celebrations will begin at 8:00 PM with artists such as Alberto Barros, Víctor García, Regina Orozco, and DJ Erich.
Venustiano Carranza
The mayor’s office will celebrate starting at 9:00 p.m. with Caifanes, Adolescentes Orquesta, Jaime Varela as Juan Gabriel, and the Estrellas de Sinaloa group.
Xochimilco
Xochimilco has scheduled a concert by Mariana Seoane and Jorge Carmona, La Voz del Barrio, on the mayor’s office esplanade starting at 9:00 p.m.
Breathalyzers for Fiestas Patrias (National Holidays)
The city government has announced the “Drive Without Alcohol” operation to prevent road accidents during the national holidays. The breathalyzers will remain in operation from the evening of Thursday, September 11th, until Tuesday, September 16th, throughout the day in the various mayor’s offices.
Likewise, the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) has announced the deployment of 13,000 police officers who will carry out patrols and security patrols to ensure the safety of those attending the celebrations in the Zócalo and the civic-military parade commemorating Independence Day.
